About the Harvard Apparatus PHD Ultra

Description:

Engineered for nanoliter precision and industrial robustness, the PHD Ultra drives one to ten syringes from 0.5 µL to 140 mL in infuse, withdraw or push-pull modes under constant flow or pressure. A lead-screw with <0.1 µm microstep resolution and closed-loop encoder yields flow accuracies of ±0.25 % across an unrivalled 12-order dynamic range—from 1.56 pL min⁻¹ for microfluidics to 216 mL min⁻¹ for pharmacology boluses. The 4.3-inch color touchscreen offers icon-based programming of gradients, pulses and multi-pump daisy chains; real-time and relative clocks enable unattended 30-day protocols. Orientation flips between vertical and horizontal without tools, and a 75 lb constant linear force guarantees stall-free delivery of viscous reagents. USB, RS-232, RS-485 and 15-pin TTL ports integrate with LabVIEW or electrophysiology rigs. Although capable of high force, the pump measures just 12 × 8.5 × 7.25 in and consumes 50 W from a universal 100–240 V supply.

Economic Advantage:

Researchers once bought separate micro- and macro-flow pumps; the PHD Ultra’s picoliter-to-hundreds-of-milliliters span consolidates workflows and frees bench space. Standardizing on one platform speeds technician training and, with only one spare-parts kit needed, cuts maintenance inventory by roughly 40 %.
