About the Bernina 1090
Description:
Made in Switzerland in the mid-1990s, the Bernina 1090 married a rugged metal chassis to then-cutting-edge electronics: a DC motor good for roughly 900 stitches-per-minute, 5.5 mm stitch width and 6 mm length, 100 + utility & decorative patterns with one-step buttonholes, 15 needle positions, memory, mirror-image and needle-up/down. An LCD and soft-touch keys simplified setup, while the free-arm, knee-lift and plug-in presser feet kept the machine firmly in the serious-utility camp. Weight is a hefty 28.6 lb—great for vibration-free quilting.
Economic Advantage:
The 1090’s claim to fame was bringing industrial-grade stitch consistency and computer memory to the home studio without the 9 mm feed dogs that quilters complained pulled fine piecing off-grain. Owners paid a premium up front but benefited from a virtually wear-proof drivetrain and low depreciation; decades on, refurbished units still fetch four-figure prices, proving its long-term cost efficiency.
