About the Masimo EMMA ETCO2 Handheld
Description:
EMMA clips in-line between airway adapter and circuit, displaying real-time EtCO₂ and respiration rate on a 0.9-in OLED within 15 s of power-up. The dual-channel NDIR sensor samples at 20 Hz and reports 0–99 mmHg (0–9.9 kPa) with ±2 mmHg accuracy below 40 mmHg. Two AAA cells drive ≥ 5 h (alkaline) or 10 h (lithium) of continuous use; audible alarms flag apnea, high/low EtCO₂ and low battery. At 2.1 × 1.6 × 1.6 in and 2.1 oz, EMMA adds only 6 mL airway dead space (adult adapter) and withstands –5 to 122 °F operation. The IP44 enclosure tolerates ambulance splashes, and zeroing requires holding two buttons—no calibration gas.
Economic Advantage:
With zero warm-up delays and disposable adapters, EMMA turns any BVM or endotracheal circuit into a quantitative capnograph for <10 % of the cost and weight of traditional monitors. Its AAA batteries negate procurement of CR123s or proprietary packs and cut standby costs in EMS jump bags.
