About the Hospira Plum 360
Description:
The Plum 360 is ICU Medical’s flagship MedNet-ready infusion pump, built around the signature Plum cassette that carries two independent fluid paths—Lines A and B—inside the same administration set. A micro-stepping stepping-motor actively meters fluid instead of relying on gravity, so the pump delivers accurate flow on a bed, in transport, or hanging below the patient. Programming is done on a bright electroluminescent display; rate, VTBI, dose, or time may be keyed in any order and checked on a single, color-coded screen. Hospira MedNet Guardrails libraries live in the pump, enforcing hard and soft dose limits and tracking every override for CQI reports. The closed-air-management system can back-prime automatically—clearing proximal air without breaking the distal line—and allows direct secondary infusions through the cassette, eliminating head-height calculations. Integrated 802.11 Wi-Fi or Ethernet keeps drug files and firmware current, while hourly self-tests verify valves, sensors, audio, and battery health. An internal 6 V sealed-lead battery supports seven hours at 25 mL h⁻¹ and recharges in under eight hours while running a 125 mL h⁻¹ infusion.
Economic Advantage:
One Plum 360 replaces two single-line pumps and a separate secondary set: the dual-path cassette runs concurrent or piggy-back therapy through a single distal line. Closed air management eliminates routine drip-chamber purges and the cost of vented secondary sets, while built-in back-priming reduces tubing waste by up to 45 %. Because the same PlumSet disposables fit earlier Plum A⁺ pumps, hospitals standardize on a sole administration set and cut SKU inventory nearly in half. MedNet libraries and dose-error-reduction analytics have been shown to avert one serious programming error every 400 infusions, avoiding adverse-event costs that dwarf the pump’s purchase price.
