About the Zeiss Humphrey FDT 710
Description:
The Zeiss Humphrey FDT 710 couples Welch Allyn’s Frequency-Doubling Technology (FDT) with a rotary 40 ° × 40 ° display to flag early glaucomatous loss before it appears on standard perimeters. Supra-threshold screening (C-20 or nasal-biased N-30) auto-runs in ≈ 35 s per eye and prints on the built-in thermal printer, while 4-minute threshold programs use the MOBS staircase algorithm for quantitative follow-up. A seven-button keypad beside the back-lit LCD guides operators; the patient simply watches the visor and taps a response button. The 10 in × 19 in counter-top chassis weighs < 20 lb, plugs into any 115/230 V outlet and stores results or streams them to an EHR via the RS-232 port. Weekly self-calibration and front-loading paper keep upkeep minimal, and the enclosed optics mean no dark room is required.
Economic Advantage:
Practices adopted the FDT 710 because it squeezed a reimbursable glaucoma screen into one pre-test minute without adding a full perimeter room or specialist staff. Its 35-second supra-threshold test lets a technician screen both eyes during intake—freeing doctors’ chair time and catching defects sooner, which reduces costly refractions and follow-up visits. The all-in-one printer and two-year-cycle consumables cut operating expense, and the lightweight body can be moved between lanes or satellite clinics instead of buying multiple full-size perimeters.
