About the Eppendorf 5417R Refrigerated

Description:

The Eppendorf 5417 R is a bench-top, research-grade micro-centrifuge that mates a brush-less drive to an actively refrigerated rotor chamber so samples stay at set temperature even at its full 16 400 rpm (25 000 × g) rating. A foil-sealed keypad and dual LED displays let users select speed in rpm or RCF, set run time from 1–99 min or continuous, and program target chamber temperature anywhere between –9 °C and +40 °C. “Fast Cool” takes the bowl from room temperature to 4 °C in about 20 min, while standby refrigeration keeps the rotor cold between runs. Automatic rotor recognition, imbalance detection and a double-locking steel lid meet IEC 1010 safety, and the fixed-angle F-45-30-11 rotor spins thirty 1.5/2 mL tubes without adapters. Despite the performance, the 5417 R occupies just a 12 × 24-inch slice of bench and runs quietly (<60 dB), powered by a 700 W, 120 V line.

Economic Advantage:

When it was introduced, the 5417 R was one of the first micro-centrifuges that could both reach ultrafast pelletizing speeds and hold 4 °C throughout the run, eliminating the need to shuttle heat-sensitive protein or RNA samples back and forth to a cold room. Its small footprint and single-phase power meant labs could replace two slower, non-refrigerated units (and the ice bath they sat in) with one 5417 R, freeing bench space and cutting energy use. Onboard cooling shortens workflows, while the high-capacity 30-place rotor reduces batch runs—together translating into higher daily throughput and lower cost per spin compared with legacy air-cooled micro-centrifuges plus a separate refrigerated floor model.
