About the Medfusion 3500 Ambulatory
Description:
The ICU Medical (formerly Smiths Medical) Medfusion 3500 is an ambulatory/bedside syringe infusion pump that delivers drugs, nutrition or blood products at precisely controlled rates from 0.01 to 1130 mL/hr, with ± 2 % volumetric accuracy across all approved 1 – 60 mL syringes. A 240 × 64-pixel back-lit LCD, large text drug names and two soft-key rows let clinicians program any of 18 delivery modes—from simple mL/hr to weight-based dose/kg/min—while the optional PharmGuard® drug library applies hard/soft limits and clinical alerts to curb dosing errors. The horizontal plunger drive simplifies one-hand loading, FlowSentry™ continuously trends line pressure for rapid occlusion detection, and the pump is MR-conditional and IPX3 splash-resistant, so it can travel from NICU to radiology without changing hardware. Power comes from a 2.3 Ah NiMH pack good for about 10 hours at 5 mL/hr, or from any 110–240 V outlet; a pole clamp or lockbox turns the 3.8-lb chassis into either a mobile or secured station.
Economic Advantage:
Hospitals embraced the Medfusion 3500 because it unites precision low-flow delivery (0.01 mL/hr resolution even on 60 mL syringes) with a configurable dose-error-reduction system—eliminating the need for separate “NICU-only” pumps and expensive add-on safety modules. One device now covers arterial, epidural, enteral, IV, intrathecal and sub-Q routes, cutting fleet diversity and training time. The synchronized two-year battery–electrode maintenance cycle, rugged IPX3 housing, and annual-only preventive service keep lifetime upkeep among the lowest in its class, while fewer retitrations and drug-library-driven error reductions translate into shorter nurse workflows and measurable cost avoidance from adverse-event prevention.
