About the Canon CR-2

Description:

Canon’s CR-2 condenses full-featured non-mydriatic fundus photography into a 33-pound tabletop footprint. A dedicated EOS DSLR delivers 15-megapixel color, red-free or cobalt images through a 45-degree objective, while the white-LED flash and infrared-LED alignment system minimize patient discomfort and power draw. Operators guide capture with an illuminated omni-joystick and view live focus on a built-in 3-inch LCD; autofocus can switch from anterior to fundus once proper pupil alignment is detected. The camera handles pupils down to 4 mm—or 3.3 mm in small-pupil mode—and offers 2× digital magnification for macular detail. With motorized X-Y-Z movement ranges of 70, 100 and 30 mm respectively, the CR-2 adapts to varied patient anatomy inside a chassis measuring just 12 × 19.7 × 18.6 in. A single 100–240 V IEC inlet powers both optics and PC interface, and images flow directly into DICOM or JPEG archives via the bundled control software.

Economic Advantage:

By replacing xenon flash tubes with long-life LEDs and drawing under 40 W in operation, the CR-2 slashes bulb replacements and electricity costs—Canon estimates a 20 % lifetime energy reduction versus earlier CR models. Its small-pupil imaging cuts dilation wait times, boosting daily patient throughput without extra staff, and the all-in-one build avoids the expense and maintenance of external capture cameras, making it a low-total-cost retina solution for outpatient offices.
