About the Hospira Abbott Plum A+

Description:

The Hospira / Abbott Plum A+ is a cassette-based, large-volume infusion pump built around the PlumSet™ cassette, which channels two independent primary lines (A & B) into a single patient line without manual “hang-high” manipulations. A back-lit character LCD and hard-key interface guide the user through primary, secondary, concurrent or multistep programs, while ultrasonic air-in-line sensing and automated back-priming clear up to 2 mL of trapped air. Dose Error-Reduction Software (MedNet) can be field-installed to enforce drug-library limits, and variable occlusion thresholds (1–15 psig) plus integrated distal pressure sensing safeguard against infiltration. The sealed 6 V lead-acid pack keeps the 9.5 lb unit running for roughly six hours at 125 mL/hr, after which it fully recharges in about the same time on standard 120 V mains power.

Economic Advantage:

Plum A+ gained traction because its cassette architecture cut bedside setup time and virtually eliminated the secondary-bag elevation steps required by gravity-driven “piggyback” pumps, saving nurses several minutes per infusion. Concurrent delivery through a single patient line also reduced tubing costs and insertion-site manipulations, lowering both supply spend and infection risk. When paired with MedNet, hospitals reported sharp drops in dose-programming errors without buying pricier, wholly new “smart” pumps, giving the platform a high safety return on a modest capital outlay.
