About the Medtronic Tono-Pen XL

Description:

The Tono-Pen XL is a 7¼-inch, pencil-style applanation tonometer that puts Goldmann-comparable intra-ocular-pressure (IOP) measurement literally in the palm of your hand. A 1 mm micro-strain-gauge transducer at the tip delivers contact readings; onboard Leading Edge™ recognition ensures the probe records only true applanation events, while ScanLock™ electronics sample the signal 500 times / sec and automatically average four valid hits to display a single IOP value with a confidence index on the LCD. Because the instrument weighs just 2.1 oz and runs on two long-life 3 V lithium OCU-CEL cells, it works in any orientation—upright slit-lamp, wheelchair, operating theatre or bedside—and is ready for roughly 1,200 measurements per battery set. Disposable Ocu-Film® tip covers prevent cross-contamination, and daily one-button self-calibration keeps maintenance to a minimum.

Economic Advantage:

Before devices like the Tono-Pen XL, clinicians were anchored to bench-top Goldmann heads and fully upright patients; screening sedated children, supine surgical cases or outreach populations meant expensive, time-consuming work-arounds. By combining Goldmann-level accuracy (±2 mmHg) with true hand-held portability, the Tono-Pen XL let practices take reliable IOP readings anywhere, slash setup time, and double-dip operatory space—turning a fixed-station procedure into a 20-second point-of-care test that pays for itself in throughput and patient access.
